Spaces No One Sees
Lyrics by Drew Dale
Verse 1
I walk in the space between two worlds,
One’s ancient, spiritual, where the Dreaming swirls.
The other’s tied to a faraway shore,
Convicts sent out by Britain’s law.
The world I walk was split in two,
Growin’ up learnin’ what was false and what was true.
Verse 2
My Aboriginal blood was hidden deep,
A family secret we were forced to keep.
Racism waited if the truth got out,
Whispers, judgement, shame, and doubt.
Still the old stories found their way,
Passed down quiet, teachin’ us how to stay.
Chorus
I’m walkin’ between two worlds, livin’ in the tension,
Truths once buried that now need attention.
I carry every line that made me who I am today,
The ones they hid, the ones they couldn’t take away.
I’m standin’ in the middle, but I’m standin’ proud —
Two worlds in my heartbeat, both speakin’ loud.
Yeah, I walk in the spaces no one sees.
Verse 3
I honour my Aboriginal ancestry,
Findin’ strength in the knowledge it gives me.
But I still nod to my Irish line,
Even if that thread is barely mine.
I walk in the spaces in between,
Too white for some, too black for who they want me to be.
Bridge
I’m done with bein’ told which side I should choose,
Done with shrinkin’ down the parts I feared to lose.
Both worlds shaped me, both worlds belong —
Now I sing them together in the same strong song.
Final Chorus
I’m walkin’ between two worlds, livin’ in the tension,
Truths once buried that now need attention.
I carry every line that made me who I am today,
The ones they hid, the ones they couldn’t take away.
I’m standin’ in the middle, but I’m standin’ proud —
Two worlds in my heartbeat, both speakin’ loud.
Yeah, I walk in the spaces no one sees.
Outro
Yeah, I walk in the spaces no one sees,
But both walk with me — and that’s how it’ll be.
